What is TrustLine?

TrustLine is a database of nannies, babysitters, and other child care providers not required to be licensed, that have cleared a criminal background check in California. It is administered by the California Department of Social Services and the non-profit California Child Care Resource and Referral Network.
Created in 1987 after parents envisioned and advocated for it, TrustLine was signed into law by Governor Deukmejian — making it a resource built for parents, by parents.

A person who is Registered with TrustLine has passed a background screening which means they have no disqualifying criminal convictions or arrests, and no substantiated child abuse reports in California.
Additionally, applicants are cross-checked with databases from the California Department of Health, Department of Health Care Services, Emergency Medical Services Authority, and Department of Aging to ensure no licenses or permits have been denied, suspended, or revoked.
Continuously Updated
Once registered, TrustLine maintains a rap-back service — the California Department of Social Services receives subsequent criminal history and child abuse information on a continual basis. This means you can contact TrustLine at any time to get current status information.

In January 2021, the California Department of Social Services launched Guardian — an online database used to process background checks and house background check information. Guardian provides an online portal to assist agencies and applicants, making the process faster and more efficient.
Guardian does not replace TrustLine. TrustLine is the name of the background check, and Guardian is the name of the online database. Parents cannot log onto Guardian to see results — only the applicant or agency that submitted the application can access that information.
